What is a Class Code? (The key to Book Clubs)

Important Information for Teachers and Parents

Whether you are a teacher or a parent, you are participating in Book Clubs when you use a Class Code on your order. Class Code is a unique code given to teachers who run Book Clubs that links all orders placed back to their classroom. Book Club teachers will share their Class Code with their classroom parents, and parents can also look it up on this site. Every order for rewardable items placed using this code will send Book Clubs Bonus Bank Rewards directly to the teacher’s account to help them select free books and resources for the classroom. Any item that is tagged with a piggy bank and states “Earns Rewards with Class Code” is a rewardable item. Multiple Class Codes can be used on a single order so that the rewards will be split between multiple teachers.

When a teacher answers ‘Yes’ to the question ‘Are you running Book Clubs?’ they are agreeing to submit, receive, and distribute Student Online Book Clubs orders placed by parents using their Class Code. If a parent using a teacher’s Class Code submits an order using ‘Ship to School’ as the shipping method, that order will go to the cart of the Book Clubs teacher and then the teacher will need to submit it to Scholastic before the order will ship. These orders will be shipped to the school address associated with the teacher’s account. Parents will be charged for their own orders, not the Book Clubs teacher. However, the combined total value of orders being submitted by a Book Clubs teacher at one time must be $40 or more in order to qualify for free shipping. If the combined value is less than $40 a shipping charge of $7.50 (pre-tax) will be applied and must be paid by the submitting Book Clubs teacher.

Teachers: How to Create, Find, and Use a Class Code

Creating a Class Code

Teachers: You will be automatically assigned a unique Class Code when you answer ‘Yes’ to the questions ‘Do you teach or work in a school, licensed daycare, or home school?’ and ‘Are you running Book Clubs?’ during the account creation process. If you already have an account and you answered ‘No’ to either of these questions, you can change your answer at any time. Just sign into your account and go to ‘My Profile’ (accessible by clicking ‘My Account’ in the top-right corner). Your Class Code will be automatically applied to any orders that you place.

What do you do if your classroom order is under $40?

Finding a Class Code

Teachers: Once you have been assigned a Class Code, you can find it online in the 'My Account' drop-down menu on the homepage. If you need assistance getting your Class Code, please call Customer Service. If you want to look up another teacher’s Class Code, please use the ‘Find a Class Code’ link in the Class Code section during checkout.

Using a Class Code

Teachers: Once you have been assigned a Class Code it will be automatically applied to any orders that you place. If you wish to share your Book Clubs Bonus Bank Rewards with other teachers, you can add additional Class Codes in the Class Code section during checkout. Please note: your own Class Code is the only Class Code that will ever be automatically applied to your order. Class Codes cannot be applied to orders paid using Book Fair Scholastic Dollars or a Purchase Order.

Parents: How to Find and Use a Class Code

Finding a Class Code

Parents: If your child’s teacher has not already shared their Class Code for you to use, you can look it up once you have signed in to your account. (Don’t have an account? See the ‘How do I create an account’ section on this page.) Once you are signed in to your account, click the ‘Find a Class Code’ link and follow the instructions. If you cannot find your child’s teacher’s name, please reach out to them directly. They may need to adjust their profile settings.

Using a Class Code

If you do not know the Class Code you are using then you will also be presented with an option to look up any teacher’s Class Code. If you skip or miss either of these steps, you will be given another option to look up and enter a Class Code in the ‘Class Code’ section on the first page of the checkout process.

How do I receive my order?

How you receive your order will depend on who you are and what shipping method you choose.

Parents

As a parent, if you use a Class Code on your order you will have the option to ship your order to the classroom of the teacher whose Class Code you are using. You will not be charged for shipping. Your order will be part of the consolidated classroom order. The classroom order will ship for free to the classroom when the order reaches $40 (before taxes), otherwise a $7.50 shipping fee will be applied to the teacher’s account. If you choose this option and check out your order will be held until your classroom teacher submits it. You will be notified by email when your teacher has submitted the order, and again when it has shipped from Scholastic. You will not be charged until your order has shipped. Your order will be received by your classroom teacher at their school, and they will send it home with your child.

If you do not wish to ship your order to the classroom, you can ship to an alternate address of your choosing. This option always has a shipping charge.

Teachers

As a teacher, if you use your own Class Code on your order, you will have the option to ship it to your classroom. This option is free for orders of $40 or more (before taxes).

If you use a different teacher’s Class Code on your order, you will have the option to ship your order to the classroom of that teacher. You will not be charged for shipping. Your order will be part of that teacher’s consolidated classroom order. The classroom order will ship for free to that teacher’s classroom when the order reaches $40 (before taxes), otherwise a $7.50 shipping fee will be applied to that teacher’s account. If you choose this option and check out your order will be held until that teacher submits it. You will be notified by email when they have submitted the order, and again when it has shipped from Scholastic. You will not be charged until your order has shipped. Your order will be received by that teacher at their school.

If you do not wish to ship your order to a classroom, you can ship it to an alternate address of your choosing. This option always has a shipping charge.

What happened to Scholastic Canada Teachables?

During the pandemic there was an urgent need for downloadable, digital lessons and resources to support teachers and families learning from home. Now that the majority of our customers have transitioned back to in-person learning, we made the decision to close the Scholastic Canada Teachables website. We are currently working to add this type of product to the Book Clubs site.

Teachers: what do you do if your classroom order is under $40?

If you have handed out the flyers, set a due date for orders, and yet the sum of all the orders you have have received still does not meet the $40 minimum, try communicating with parents and let them know that some parents are looking to place an order, and ask if anyone else would like to add to the order. You are always in control of the program and the timeline for submitting the orders is completely up to you.

Here are some more tips to help your classroom reach a $40 consolidated order so you can benefit from free shipping to the classroom!

1. Send home a parent letter
Regular communication keeps families involved. Send home a parent letter that includes your class literacy goals and your classroom wish list!

2. Talk up books in the classroom
When you hand out the flyer, take time to talk-up your favourite titles and get your students excited about reading!

3. Add your own items to the cart
If your classroom order is under $40, go shopping on bookclubs.scholastic.ca and add items you need most to your cart!

4. Talk to other teachers and run the Book Clubs program together
Talk to other teachers in your school and offer to run the program for them as well. All they need to do is send home your Class Code and every order placed using it will appear in your cart, which should make it a lot easier to reach the $40 threshold!

5. Consider running the program at a school level
Speak to other teachers, the librarian, principal, and parent council and see if it would be more beneficial to run Book Clubs this way.

6. Consider only handing out the flyer a few times a year instead of once a month

Teachers: what do you do if you have classroom families that are not online?

We understand that some of you want to have the option to gather your class orders and submit them yourself to help make Book Clubs available to families who may be unable to order online. Here are the steps you can take in this situation:

• Create a letter for parents to explain that you will collect orders in the classroom for those that don’t want to order online. The letter should include your Class Code, a due date for orders, applicable tax rates for your province, and lines for them to write in the items they are ordering, the quantities they want, and the total plus applicable taxes.

• Tell parents that you will be submitting the non-online orders, they will ship to you at your school, and you will distribute them when they arrive. Make sure you apply your own Class Code to the order to earn Rewards. Classroom orders over $40 ship for free to the school. Classroom orders less than $40 cost only $7.50 to ship. Select ‘Ship to School’ at checkout. Payments from parents are made directly to you. Scholastic Canada does not accept cheques as payment for Book Clubs orders. You will submit and pay for the non-online orders via credit card or PayPal.

• Create a spreadsheet for yourself or use this one we created with the help of our Facebook Teacher Advisor Group (make sure to select the right tab for your province) to help track when these orders arrive, method of payments, etc.

Classroom Wishlists, Recommendations to Students, and Personal Lists

Classroom Wishlists and lists of ‘Recommendations to Students’
A Classroom Wishlist is a way for teachers to let parents know which books they need for the classroom library. A list of ‘Recommendations to Students’ is a way for teachers to let parents know about books they think are just-right for the students in their classroom.

Teachers: You can only add items to your Classroom Wishlist and/or your list of ‘Recommendations to Students’ when you are signed in and you are set up as a Book Club teacher (i.e. in your Profile settings you have selected ‘yes’ to the question ‘Are you running Book Clubs?’). To add an item to either of these lists, just look up the item that you need, click on the , and select the name of the list from the pop-up that appears.
When you have added one or more items to either of these lists, a space advertising the lists and what is on them will then appear for any parents logged in using your Class Code, on the homepage of the site. For items on your Classroom Wishlist, when the item has been purchased it will no longer be shown to parents, to avoid additional unnecessary purchases. When a parent purchases an item as a gift for your classroom it will be indicated in the email informing you about their order. Also, the packing slip that comes with your classroom order will indicate any items which have been purchased as gifts for the classroom, and by whom.
You cannot add items designated ‘oversized’ to a Classroom Wishlist, and parents cannot purchase oversized items as gifts for the classroom.
Once you have added an item to either of these lists, here are some other things you can do by going to the ‘My Lists’ page under ‘My Account’:

  • You can add notes to Classroom Wishlist items, telling parents why that item is an important classroom resource. You can add notes to items on your list of ‘Recommendations to Students’, explaining in detail why you think each book is great. If you have the same item on both lists you can add two separate notes. These notes will only be visible to parents who are signed in using your Class Code.
  • You can delete items from the list by clicking the garbage can icon next to the item.
  • And for items on your Classroom Wishlist you can set or change the quantity of each item that you need, and you can see how many have been purchased. The item will not stop displaying to your parents until the quantity you have set is completely purchased.

Parents: When you are logged in using your teacher’s Class Code, and if your teacher has created a Classroom Wishlist and/or a list of ‘Recommendations to Students’, you will see them on the homepage of the site. (Note: this function does not work if you have applied multiple Class Codes.)
If you are logged in using a Class Code, almost any item on the site* can be purchased as a gift for your teacher’s classroom using the ‘Gift to Class’ button instead of the ‘Add to Cart’ button. If an item you are looking at is specifically on your teacher’s Classroom Wishlist, it will be noted as such. If your order contains a gift for the classroom, you will only have ‘Ship to School’ as a shipping option; classroom gifts cannot be shipped directly to your home. Any item that you purchase using the ‘Gift to Class’ button as a gift for the classroom will still be part of your shopping cart, and you will be charged for it when it ships – just like any item that you purchase – but unlike the items that you purchase using the ‘Add to Cart’ button, the ‘Gift to Class’ items will not come home with your child; they will stay in the classroom with the teacher. These items are sent to the teacher in the Book Box with the classroom order, and they are listed on the teacher’s packing slip as a Classroom Wishlist item with the name of the purchasing student. When you check out, the items you are purchasing for yourself and the items you are gifting to the classroom will be listed under separate headings.
*The only exceptions are items designated as ‘oversized’. These items cannot be purchased as gifts for the classroom.

Other Lists
Only Book Club teachers can create Classroom Wishlists and lists of ‘Recommendation to Students’, but any customer – whether they are a teacher or a parent – can make additional lists for themselves, as a way to remember and organize items that they do not wish to purchase now.
To create a List, click on ‘My Account’ and select ‘My Lists’ from the drop-down menu. From there, select ‘Create a New List’. You can create up to ten personal lists.
To view a List, click on its name on your ‘My Lists’ page.
While viewing a List, you can move items to your Shopping Cart by clicking ‘Add to Cart’. You can delete an item from a List by clicking the garbage can icon beside the item.
To add an item to a List, just view the item that you want and click on the and then click the plus sign next to the name of the List that you want to save it to. The plus sign will then turn into a checkmark and the heart icon will turn red, which is how you know your item has been added.
When viewing your Shopping Cart, there is an option to ‘Move to List’. You can then select the List you want to save the item to by clicking the plus sign. The plus sign will then turn into a checkmark, which is how you know your item has been added. The item will be removed from your Shopping Cart.

Reading Level: GRL

During the school year, your child may be assessed by their teacher and be asked to read from a benchmark book (one considered standard for the grade). Kids may also be asked to answer questions about the text or retell the story. Their teacher will help determine a suitable Guided Reading Level (GRL) and books for your child. Under GRL, books run from A to Z, with A being the easiest. Your child will gradually move step by step into more difficult text. At home, you can support the reading in the classroom by providing books at the appropriate level for your child to read independently.

Reading Level: DRA

DRA stands for "Developmental Reading Assessment". Similar to GRL, at the beginning of the school year your child will read a benchmark book to the teacher and then retell the story. The teacher then scores your child on a range of skills, such as accuracy of reading, comprehension, and fluency. This system starts with level A, for the easiest books, and then switches to numeric levels, running from 1 to 80.
